The Bronx Documentary Center is pleased to announce the second in a series of six classes leading to a Salon Exhibition in June. Brian Young, a Master Printer of Gelatin Silver B&W photography, is teaching this series over a period of 8 months. The classes will culminate in an exhibition of student work at the BDC in spring, 2023. Students are free to follow any number of workshops as they develop and refine the content of their work in finely executed gelatin silver prints. The number of prints from students will be in proportion to their participation in the workshops; every enrolled student will have their work represented in the exhibition, space permitting. All of the classes may include portfolio reviews/critiques by invited professionals, an image editing workshop for publication/portfolio and a workshop on mat cutting for gallery presentation.

Description

Although it may seem challenging, it’s possible (and relatively easy) to produce quality B&W negatives even at home. In this class you’ll learn how to produce consistent results with your negatives, which translate into predictable printing times, contrast, settings and desired tonal scale.

By practicing printing negatives you’ll be able to analyze the quality of your negatives for grain, contrast/density and tonal scale. Printing in the darkroom at BDC will be the final test of your effort...seeing the positive in a silver print. Using a film scanner/ inkjet printer is an alternate proofing option for those without an analog option. This class is ideal for anyone who wants to become ‘the master of their own analog fate’.

Brian Young is a Canadian-born photographer, teacher and master printer. Since 1980, he has dedicated himself to analog B&W photography. He has been a member of the ICP faculty since 1988 and has taught workshops in Brazil, Mexico and Spain. In 1992, he started Phototechnica Inc., a custom B&W lab that specializes in exhibition printing, book projects and commercial repro. He has printed for prominent national and international art photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers. He has also printed for exhibitions in distinguished museums around the world. In 2016, he published a book of pictures from his own archive, The Train: NYC 1984. Young enjoys collaborating with photographers who still believe in the unique beauty of film photography and the silver gelatin print.
