BDC Spotlight: Maria De La Paz Galindo

 

Maria De La Paz Galindo is a Mixtec indigenous from Oaxaca, Mexico. She has lived in the South Bronx for 29 years and was a dedicated long-term volunteer before becoming the BDC's Community Engagement Coordinator. For this month's BDC Spotlight Series we spoke with Maria to learn more about her experience working with our community:

Q: Can you tell us about one of your favorite experiences at the BDC?

My favorite experience at the BDC will always be the feeling of being welcomed to an unfamiliar place. I remember how nice it felt to be a part of a new family. 

Mi experiencia favorita en el BDC fue la de sentirme bienvenida en un lugar desconocido. Recuerdo lo bien que me sentí ser parte de una nueva familia. 

Q: What is a project you're working on now?

A long-term project I am working on is structuring photography classes in Spanish at different levels for our Hispanic community. Our future classes will include levels for beginning to advanced photographers. 

El proyecto a largo plazo es estructurar clases de fotografía en español desde principiantes hasta avanzados para ofrecerlas a nuestra comunidad hispana.

Q: How has working at the BDC impacted you?

Working at the BDC has impacted my life in so many ways. But I'm going to pick one. Working here for me is like going to college, (I never went). Every day I learn different things from my coworkers, the students, the volunteers, the visitors, and everyone who is at the BDC. The BDC for me is a place of learning and empowerment. 

Trabajar en el BDC ha impactado mi vida de muchas maneras. Pero voy a elegir una. Trabajar aquí para mi es como ir a la universidad, (nunca fui). Todos los días aprendo de todas las personas que me rodean, mis compañeros de trabajo, los estudiantes, los voluntarios, los visitantes en fin de todos. Porque eso es el BDC para mi un lugar de aprendizaje y empoderamiento. 

Q:  What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter your field?

First you have to be very passionate about what you do, have empathy for others, and have the desire to contribute to a better world.

Primero tienes que ser muy apasionado en lo que haces,  tener empatía por los demás. y tener el deseo de contribuir para un mundo mejor.

Q: Who/what inspires you?

My inspiration is my community, especially the mothers I meet every day. Because I see myself in them, I’m easily able to understand the struggles they go through to raise their children. I see how they constantly look for opportunities to improve their lives and that is what motivates me in my work with the BDC. Of course we don't have all the tools to make big changes immediately but like everything in life, big things start with small steps and that inspires me to work hard and put my heart into everything I do.

Mi inspiración es mi comunidad, especialmente las madres que me encuentro cada día. Porque me veo en ellas, puedo facilmente entender como luchan por sacar a sus hijos adelante. Veo cómo buscan constantemente oportunidades para mejorar sus vidas y eso es lo que me impulsa en el BDC. Por supuesto que no contamos con todas las herramientas para hacer grandes cambios inmediatamente, pero como todo en la vida, las cosas grandes empiezan con pequeños pasos y eso me inspira a trabajar duro y a poner el corazón en todo lo que hago.
