Part-Time Teaching Artist for the Bronx Junior Photo League

6th-8th Grade After-School Photography Class
Tuesdays, 4:15-5:45PM
October 3, 2017 - June 14, 2018

The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) is a non-profit gallery and educational space; our mission is to share documentary photography, film, and new media with underserved Bronx communities and the cultural community at large. We use these mediums to foster dialogue around contemporary local, national, and global issues. We also provide education programs for middle and high school students and a professional education program for Bronx-based artists that provide opportunities for training in documentary photography, film, and multimedia storytelling.

The Bronx Junior Photo League (BJPL) is a free after-school photography and journalism program serving middle through high school students. The program teaches Bronx youth to use documentary practices to explore their communities, families, environments, and much more.

The program focuses on social justice issues in the South Bronx, one of America’s poorest and most underserved communities. Our curriculum gives students an immersive experience in the technical aspects of photography and photo editing as well as programs promoting critical thinking skills, visual and news literacy, and writing practice.

Overview:

As a part-time position, the Teaching Artist (TA) will lead a 6th-8th grade Bronx Junior Photo League class. The TA plays a critical role in the success of the program and takes on a variety of roles within the program including facilitator, mentor and teacher to both students and teaching assistants. Teaching Artists should have demonstrated experience in the photography disciplines and be passionate about teaching school-aged children. The TA should be experienced and comfortable discussing social justice issues and using documentary photography practices to explore them. All Teaching Artists report to the Education Manager.

Time Commitment:

Teaching Artist is required to be at the Bronx Documentary Center for class every Tuesday from 4:15-5:45PM. A commitment of 3-4 hours per week is required. Due to changing/flexible needs of BDC, it is understood that additional hours may be required, and flexibility in arrival and departure time may occur.

Responsibilities/Duties:

● Coordinates the Bronx Junior Photo League 6th-8th grade class on Tuesday afternoons.

● Meet with BDC staff to determine curriculum using Bronx Junior Photo League curriculum template

● Attend BDC teaching staff trainings throughout the year. There are two mandatory trainings on September 29th and 30th.

● Participate in meetings with 6th-8th grade teaching staff once a month

● Maintain communication with Education Manager to report curriculum, activities, changes in program design, and assessment

● Prepare and teach lessons weekly

● Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible

● Document student attendance

● Coordinate and facilitate student trips

● Manage teaching assistants: assign responsibilities for class prep and during class

● Manage upload and storage of student work on the BDC server

● Coordinate materials and equipment as needed

● Communicating with students, their school and families as needed

Skills and Abilities

The Teaching Artist should possess the following skills and abilities:

● Have prior experience teaching photography and instructing youth

● Strong technical skills and comfort working with state of the art technology

● Knowledge of photo history, as well as contemporary art, film and culture

● Ability to connect media to contemporary issues and situations

● Commitment to youth development and community building

● Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet the students' varying needs, interests, and developmental levels

● Strong organizational and time management skills

● Energetic and collaborative personality with self-starter approach to work

● Skilled working with DSLR cameras

● Proficiency with Google Drive and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc)

● Experience with Adobe software (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, etc) is preferred

Qualifications/requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; teaching experience; excellent organizational, time management and communication skills; and thorough knowledge of photo editing software and the Google Suite.

Salary Range

The BDC Teaching Artist pay scale is based on experience and expertise. Our Teaching Artists earn between $50 and $60 an hour. Teaching Artists are also paid for training and planning time, and the BDC covers the cost of supplies.

The Teaching Assistant plays a critical role in the success of the program, preparing for each class to ensure everything runs smoothly and working with the students to help guide their work. Teaching Assistants should have demonstrated experience in the photography disciplines and be passionate about teaching school-aged children. All Teaching Assistants report to the Teaching Artist and Education Manager.

Time Commitment:

Commitment of 3-6 hours per week is required. The time commitment depends on the class the Teaching Assistant is assigned to. Due to changing/flexible needs of BDC, it is understood that additional hours may be required, and from time-to-time, flexibility in arrival and departure time may occur.

Responsibilities/Duties:

● Attend BDC teaching staff trainings throughout the year. There are two mandatory trainings on September 29th and 30th.

● Participate in monthly meetings with BDC teaching staff.

● Prepare all equipment for classes, which includes charging camera batteries and laptops and making sure cameras are on correct settings.

● Check lesson plans in advance: prepare any required materials and familiarize yourself with the lesson.

● Clean up materials and secure equipment after class.

● Upload and organize student work on the BDC server

● Coordinate with Teaching Artist on in-class responsibilities

● Have prior experience working with youth and photography

● Commitment to youth development and community building

● Strong organizational and time management skills

● Energetic and collaborative personality with self-starter approach to work

● Skilled working with DSLR cameras

● Proficiency with Google Drive and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc)

● Experience with Adobe software (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, etc) is preferred

High school diploma or equivalent work experience; teaching experience; excellent organizational, time management and communication skills; thorough knowledge of photo editing software and the Google Suite.
