We're Hiring: Director, Films Fellowship Program

Title: Director, Films Fellowship Program
Reports to: Managing Director

Bronx Documentary Center

The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) is a non-profit gallery and educational space located in the heart of the South Bronx. Our mission is to use community-based documentary practice and education to explore vital issues, stimulate critical thought, and drive social change. We use documentary photography, film, and new media to foster dialogue around contemporary local, national, and global issues.

The BDC is seeking a program Director to oversee every facet of our film fellowship program.

The Director will supervise one Program Assistant who will provide operational and technical support as well as assist with the day-to-day coordination of the program.

Program Overview:

The BDC Films Fellowship Program was created in 2018 in response to the lack of support for traditionally underrepresented documentary filmmakers in the Bronx, as well as the changes in storytelling professions that require a broader skill set for potential employment in creative industries.

Four fellows are chosen to join the free year-long program. They undergo training for three months before working on their own short documentaries. Current fellows and alumni also have the opportunity to join the BDC’s production team in contracted projects. Such projects have included a series of New York City Health and Hospitals (NYCHH) promotional and educational videos, BDC’s film project on COVID-19 in the Bronx, Verbatim’s “Fueling Social Change” project with Urban Justice Center, and more.

Through such offerings as documentary filmmaking courses and professional development workshops; mentorships; documentary film screenings and panel discussions; equipment loans and low-cost rentals; access to free meeting and work space; and a video editing suite, Bronx filmmakers will have the necessary tools to tell stories and gain employment in creative industries. The program typically runs from October through June. In addition to enhancing skills, BDC Films is dedicated to creating a peer-to-peer support network and hub which fosters dialogue and empowers Bronx filmmakers.

Time Commitment:

Commitment of 10-15 per week is required. Due to changing/flexible needs of the fellows and the BDC, it is understood that the weekly hours fluctuate. Traditionally, the program is held every Tuesday evening, 6-9pm and Saturday, 10am-5pm. The program timing is contingent on fellows’ and program staff’s availability. The schedule must be established at the beginning of the program. Additionally, overseeing or attending occasional evening or weekend BDC events will be included in the director’s responsibilities. This is an in-person position.
