REPRESENTATION:
Newsweek magazine published this photo by Balazs Gardi in their December 2007 issue. The image ran with this caption: “The number of suicide bombings in Afghanistan in 2007 has surpassed that of the last five years combined.” The accompanying story and headline referred to Taliban suicide bombers. The Taliban are enemies of the Americans.
REALITY:
The child was actually wounded by an American airstrike, not a Taliban suicide attack. Gardi, a highly regarded photojournalist, complained about the misleading usage of his photo and severed his ties with Newsweek magazine.
Gardi’s caption for the photo, found on his website, reads: “A man holds a wounded young boy in the village of Yaka Chine on October 20, 2007. The boy has received several shrapnel wounds from a US airstrike targeting a suspected insurgent position. The airstrike killed five civilians and injured at least seven villagers including children.”
