John Moore is a senior staff photographer and special correspondent for Getty Images. In 2019 he was honored with the World Press Photo of the Year in Amsterdam for his iconic image “Crying Girl on the Border.” Moore joined Getty Images in 2005 after more than a dozen years photographing internationally for the Associated Press. He has worked in some 70 countries on six continents and was posted internationally for 17 years, first to Nicaragua, then India, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt and Pakistan. After returning to live in the United States he began a decade-long project on immigration and border security issues.

The caravan of thousands of immigrants, most from Honduras, crossed the bridge and pried open the gate into Mexico but were pushed back by Mexican riot police.

PENITAS, TX – SEPTEMBER 10, 2019: U.S. Border Patrol agent Carlos Ruiz apprehends a mother and daughter from Ecuador. The undocumented immigrants had been hiding for hours in a cotton field after border agents detected and chased their group earlier in the day.

SAN JUAN SACATEPEQUEZ, GUATEMALA – FEBRUARY 14, 2017: Family members carry the caskets of two boys who were kidnapped and killed.. More than 2,000 people walked in a funeral procession for Carlos Daniel Xiqin, 10, and Oscar Armando Top Cotzajay, 11, who were reported abducted walking to school Friday morning. Residents found the boys stuffed in sacks over the weekend, with the boys’ throats slashed and hands and feet bound. Neighbors reported a ransom demand was made. Such crimes have driven emigration from Guatemala to the United States, as families seek refuge from the violence.
