The Latin American Foto Festival’s citywide events are organized in collaboration with The Action Lab.

The 8th Annual Latin American Foto Festival is made possible by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by City Council member Rafael Salamanca; the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature; Clif Family Foundation, Chris Hondros Fund, Four Friends Foundation, Con Edison, Ford Foundation, Jonathan Logan Foundation, Lawrence Foundation, Leonian Foundation; Open Society Foundations, Scherman Foundation, the Peck Foundation; and The Action Lab.

The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) will hold its 8th annual Latin American Foto Festival (LAFF) from July 10th – August 3rd, featuring large-scale photographs by both emerging and established, award-winning photographers from the region. Their work will be displayed at the BDC and throughout the South Bronx’s Melrose neighborhood from July 10th-20th and at other community spaces throughout NYC from July 24th – August 3rd.

This year’s citywide spaces will include Loisaida Center in Manhattan, Terraza 7 in Queens, Toñita’s Caribbean Social Club in Brooklyn, El Maestro Boxing Gym, Casa Amadeo, and Bronx Arts Space. As the Festival expands across other NYC boroughs, it carries a dual responsibility: to elevate personal and collective narratives and to honor the cultural sites in NYC that have historically preserved and celebrated Latin American culture. In a city where development pressures continue to displace families as well as organizations that are community anchors, the Festival has become an important foundation for recognition, visibility, and memory.

This year’s Festival includes works from Puerto Rico, Peru, El Salvador, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia–photographs representing long-term projects on the housing crisis in Peru; a young student collective based in a self-organized occupied settlement in Brazil; thirty years of the history of the Zapatista movement; a cooperative in Mexico resisting and confronting corporations in the middle of the largest city in the country; abandoned elderly citizens surviving on their own in Venezuela; life on a tiny island off the Caribbean coast of Colombia; incarceration and water crises in El Salvador; stories from the Puerto Rican diaspora; and archival images of a Caribbean social club in Brooklyn. As part of the Festival, the BDC will hold in-person workshops, tours, panel discussions, and other community events in each space.
