“I do my job simply to report people’s courage with my camera and with my heart.” Anja Niedringhaus

This exhibition honors Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus on the 10th anniversary of her death, showcasing her powerful photographs from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Anja’s work captures the resilience and humanity of those she documented, reminding us of the sacrifices journalists make to keep the world informed.

Anja’s photographs include rare glimpses into the lives of Afghans, including a poignant image of children playing near blast-proof barriers in Khost, taken the day before her tragic death in 2014. Her work serves as a testament to her dedication to documenting courage amid conflict.

Following the exhibition opening, the IWMF will present the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award to an exceptional woman photojournalist whose images reflect Anja’s commitment to capturing courage through the lens.

Anja Niedringhaus began her career in 1990 with the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) and later joined The Associated Press in 2002. She covered wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan with remarkable bravery but saw her work as a tribute to the people she documented, not simply as war photography.

In 2005, Anja was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning AP team for breaking news photography. Tragically, she was killed in Afghanistan on April 4, 2014. The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award was established by the IWMF to honor her legacy.
