The Volga River has long defined the history, geography, and identity of Russia. To explore what it means to be Russian today, journalist Marzio Mian and photographer Alessandro Cosmelli journeyed along the Volga region. Their reporting and photography, featured in the January 2024 issue of Harper’s Magazine as the essay “Behind the New Iron Curtain,” sheds light on Vladimir Putin’s isolated, neo-imperial Russia. Among their discoveries: the river’s role as a critical artery for goods and weapons, bypassing international sanctions.
Join Alessandro Cosmelli and Marzio G. Mian for an engaging presentation of their work, offering insights into the political, cultural, and social dynamics of contemporary Russia.
