The Generals of Ulla is a photobook that documents, for the first time in a complete and systematic way, one of Europe’s most singular Carnival traditions: the Xenerais da Ulla, celebrated across ten municipalities in the Ulla River valley in Galicia, northern Spain.
Over a five-year period, photographers Javier Iglesias Ramos and Eutropio Rodríguez followed the festival in all its variations—horseback parades, baroque military attire, and the iconic atranques—creating a powerful visual narrative of a living and evolving ritual.Research by musician and anthropology researcher Fernando Reyes, explores the origins of the tradition and situates it within the broader context of Baroque festive culture in the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas, reaffirming the Generals of Ulla as a cultural heritage of exceptional historical and artistic value.
