Bronx Documentary Center

Established in 2011, the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) is a dynamic mission-driven photography, journalism, and cultural organization in the South Bronx. Our staff work together to fulfill our mission–using community-based documentary photography and film practice and education to shine a light on vital issues, contribute to social change and give individuals and communities the tools to express their unique visions. Our terrific staff is the basis of all that we accomplish, and we believe that a diverse team, informed by different cultures and perspectives, makes us stronger.

We’re looking for a part-time, experienced  Director of Individual and Corporate Giving to spearhead our fundraising efforts. As Director, you’ll report to the BDC’s Executive Director and work closely with staff and the Board of Directors, spearheading work towards specific goals in individual giving, major gifts, corporate support, special events, planned giving, and annual fund campaigns. Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will be to:

  • Develop and implement effective strategies for identifying fundraising opportunities with new sources and individuals

  • Nurture and maintain relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic organizations

  • Maintain communication and engagement with potential and existing donors and institutional grantors

  • Assist in the development of the annual budget related to fundraising and development activities

  • Help prepare an organization-wide fundraising plan, including strategies for each aspect of the BDC’s fundraising program

  • Monitor and track fundraising expenses, ensuring adherence to budgetary guidelines

  • Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors to support fundraising and development efforts

  • Attend events and networking with relevant stakeholders

  • Work on planning events

  • Draft and distribute materials to promote fundraising efforts

  • Through public-facing communication, develop and maintain a positive public image for the BDC

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to identify and solicit major gift prospects from the donor pool

  • Collaborate with publicist and communications staff to ensure marketing campaigns are consistent with the BDC’s public image

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, or guidelines related to fundraising

  • Stay informed about current trends and best practices in annual giving and fundraising, incorporating new strategies into BDC's fundraising efforts.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Qualifications

Required:

Compelling candidates will be self-directed, have strong communication, writing, and analytical skills, and strong project management skills.

  • BA (required), MA (preferred)

  • Five-plus years relevant experience in development, grant writing, and individual/major gifts experience, with demonstrated success in raising significant funds

  • Strong time-management skills and strength in handling multiple projects at one time

Additional Priority Skills:

  • Prior experience working with an arts, journalism or human rights nonprofit; demonstrated interest in documentary photography and film is a strong asset

  • Strong knowledge of the city, state, and national philanthropy environment

  • Ability to be comfortable and skillful in developing relationships during BDC events and with external professionals 

  • Spanish language skills

Time Commitment

Commitment of 20 hours per week is strongly preferred; there is some flexibility in this time commitment. Weeknights and weekends may be required. This is an in-person job. 

Salary

The starting salary for this position is $40,000, commensurate with experience.
