The BDC’s annual Women's Film Series (WFS) returns for its 9th year! This year Beth Dembitzer and Tânia Cypriano have curated the festival around women documentary filmmakers telling stories that explore the power of community. Join us for post-screening conversations, as we get to know the women filmmakers and producers as they discuss the stories behind their filmmaking careers. All events are free but donations are always appreciated.

No tickets are required to attend the events. Join us!

Screening: Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project


Friday, October 13, 6:30PM—A look at the life of poet Nikki Giovanni and the revolutionary periods in which she wrote, from the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter. Directed by Michèle Stephenson and Joe Brewster.

A Q&A with the film's Associate Producer, Karem Orrego, and Producer, Amilca Palmer, will take place following the screening.

Panel Talk: Bronx Women in Documentary Film

Saturday, October 14, 4PM—Panelists include filmmaker Pam Sporn, sound recordist Veralucia Quispe Chirinos, director and producer Chanelle Aponte Pearson, and filmmaker Stefani Saintonge. Moderated by filmmaker and Director of BDC Films Fellowship,Tânia Cypriano.

Screening + Q&A: What We Leave Behind


Saturday, October 14, 7PM—Join us for an exploration of the life of Julian Moreno, an 89-year-old who’s made a 17-hour bus ride every month from Primo de Verdad, Mexico, to visit family in El Paso, Texas. After his last visit to Texas, he returned to rural Mexico and began building a new house in the empty lot next to his home. Julian’s granddaughter filmed his work over several years, creating both a love letter to her grandfather, as well as an intimate and insightful exploration of her own relationship with him and his homeland.

A Q&A with the film’s director, Iliana Sosa, will follow the screening. The award-winning director was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, and currently resides in Austin. She received her MFA in Directing from UCLA.

Sunday, October 15, 4PM—Join Lorine Padilla, ‘La Madrina’ herself, for a screening of a feature-length documentary about the beloved South Bronx matriarch and former ‘First Lady’ of the Savage Skulls gang, After settling into her elder years, a tragic incident in the Bronx forced Padilla back into action to take on a new cause. Directed by Raquel Cepeda.

A Q&A session with Lorine Padilla, Executive Producer Henry Chalfant, and Editor Sonia Martinez-Gonzales will take place after the screening, followed by a reception.
