In this workshop, led by portrait and lifestyle photographer Andrew French, you'll learn to perceive light in a new way and the techniques to use that perception in your creative work!

The first day of class will take place in French’s daylight studio near Union Square, where we will spend time analyzing the use of light – its direction, intensity and quality. You'll learn about the unique history of daylight studios, and why shooting in a daylight studio offers a completely different photographic experience than other studios. We’ll also have plenty of time to shoot portraits in the studio, so you can see the difference for yourself.

On the second day which will take place at the BDC Annex, we'll look at contemporary portable TTL battery flash units that you can put on your camera or on a stand. The technology and accessories allow you to quickly find and create unique looks and innovative uses of light for shooting street, documentary or portrait photos on location or outside. We'll compare several units, including Profoto, Westcott, Godox, and Flashpoint, as well as various accessories.

You'll have ample opportunity to test and compare the units when we go outside to shoot.
