On October 27, the Bronx Documentary Center will host its first in-person Photo Auction Benefit since 2019. The event will take place at Affirmation Arts so the spirit of the South Bronx is coming to Manhattan this year!

The Photo Auction Benefit will feature signed prints and books from internationally-renowned photographers, as well as documentary images from the BDC community of emerging photographers.

Funds raised from the event help the Bronx Documentary Center bring free exhibits, after-school programs, fellowships, neighborhood events, and more, to our South Bronx community.

Honorees:

The Bronx Documentary Center is thrilled to announce we're honoring photographer JAMEL SHABAZZ, filmmaker NADIA HALLGREN, and FUJIFILM at this year's Photo Auction Benefit in Manhattan.

We hope you'll join us in paying tribute to Jamel, Nadia, and FUJIFILM for their contributions to furthering documentary photography and filmmaking education at the BDC and beyond. It's our first in-person benefit since 2019 and we're excited to celebrate the beauty and resiliency of our community together!

JAMEL SHABAZZ is best known for his iconic photographs of New York City during the 1980s. A documentary, fashion, and street photographer, he has authored 10 monographs and contributed to over three dozen other photography related books. His photographs have been exhibited worldwide and his work is housed within the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, The Fashion Institute of Technology, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Getty Museum. Over the years, Shabazz has instructed young students at the Studio Museum in Harlem’s “Expanding the Walls” project, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture “Teen Curator’s” program, and the Bronx Museum’s “Teen Council.” He is also the 2018 recipient of the Gordon Parks award for excellence in the arts and humanitarianism and the 2022 awardee of the Gordon Parks Foundation/Steidl book prize. Jamel is also a member of the photo collective Kamoinge. His goal as an artist is to contribute to the preservation of world history and culture.

NADIA HALLGREN is an award-winning filmmaker from The Bronx, New York. Most recently, Nadia directed the Netflix feature documentary CIVIL (2022) following a year in the life of civil rights lawyer Attorney Benjamin Crump. Nadia directed BECOMING (2020), the Netflix feature documentary about former First Lady Michelle Obama. BECOMING was nominated for four Emmys and Nadia is the first person in Emmy history to be nominated in both the directing and cinematography categories on the same film. She was also awarded the NAACP "Outstanding Breakthrough Creative in a Motion Picture" award for her work on the documentary. Nadia’s most recent documentary THE SHOW (Showtime, 2021), featuring The Weeknd, received the “Best Director” award at the Sundance Branded Content Storytelling conference. Nadia’s short films include the academy-award shortlisted AFTER MARIA (Netflix, 2019 Tribeca Film Festival), and OMNIPRESENCE (The New Yorker, 2021). She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and an alum of the International Center of Photography.
