Community Engagement Coordinator
Reports to: Managing Director
Bronx Documentary Center

The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) is a non-profit gallery and educational space; our mission is to share documentary photography, film, and new media with underserved Bronx communities and the cultural community at large. We use these mediums to foster dialogue around contemporary local, national, and global issues. We also provide education programs for middle and high school students and a professional education program for Bronx-based artists that provide opportunities for training in documentary photography, film, and multimedia storytelling.

Overview:
Community engagement is integral to the BDC’s mission. We offer free entry to our exhibitions and we organize artist talks, book signings, screenings of documentaries, and more. The community engagement coordinator oversees the day-to-day management of BDC’s two galleries. This includes ensuring that the galleries are well prepared for exhibitions, public programs, space rentals, professional development workshops, and other events that take place in our galleries. Additionally, the coordinator will oversee various events throughout the year including the annual portfolio review and the annual block party.  

The coordinator will conduct ongoing outreach to our immediate communities in the Bronx. He or she will also represent the BDC and provide necessary presentations to partner organizations and institutions as needed. Additionally, BDC values community involvement and encourages volunteerism. The coordinator will lead the recruitment and training of volunteers interested in offering their time to the BDC.

Time Commitment:
A commitment of 24 hours, including availability on Saturdays 10-6pm is required. Due to changing/flexible needs of BDC, it is understood that additional hours may be required, and flexibility in arrival and departure time may occur. Overseeing an occasional evening or weekend event will be included in this worker’s responsibilities. This position is available ASAP.

 

 

Responsibilities/Duties:

Outreach (50%)

  • Regularly conduct outreach to the Bronx communities to communicate our mission, the programs we offer, as well as the resources we provide

  • Maintain audience database and mailing list

  • Develop and coordinate marketing and outreach efforts for BDC programs and earned income activities

  • Manage earned income activities including: space rentals, merchandise, professional development workshops, and portfolio review

  • Handle the day-to-day phone and voice messages for the organization and respond to inquiries on a timely manner

Gallery oversight (40%)

  • Manage gallery and program facilities, including equipment, maintenance, promotional materials, and merchandise

  • Purchase and maintain supplies and materials inventory for the gallery

  • Organize and archive public programs folder on the server

  • Provide basic bookkeeping related to public programs and earned income activities

  • Train and manage volunteers and house managers for gallery events and programs

  • Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers related to activities happening in the galleries

  • Cover gallery hours on Saturdays and as needed on Thursdays and Fridays

General (10%)

  • Assist in fundraising campaigns and efforts to gain support for the BDC

  • Act as liaison to Bronx arts and non-profit community and assists generally in BDC promotion and public relations

  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings as deemed necessary

  • Articulate BDC’s mission and work to the public

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of BDC’s Annual Fundraiser

  • Assist with coordination and production of BDC events

  • Other duties related to operations and administration as well as tasks assigned by the Executive Director


Skills and Abilities

The community engagement coordinator should possess the following skills and abilities:

    • Excellent communication skills

    • Experience managing staff and volunteers

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

    • Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail

    • Strong organizational and time management skills

    • Energetic and collaborative personality with self-starter approach to work

    • Knowledge of documentary photography and film

    • Proficiency with Google Drive and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc)

    • Experience with Adobe software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc)

    • Experience with point of sales (POS) systems and database management 

Qualifications/requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; administrative experience, arts administration helpful; excellent organizational, time management and communication skills; ability to speak Spanish is a plus; and thorough knowledge of MS Office and database applications.
