Title: Exhibition Assistant 
Reports to: Exhibition Manager
Part-time: $17/hour


The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) is a non-profit gallery and educational space; our mission is to share documentary photography, film, and new media with underserved Bronx communities and the cultural community at large. We use these mediums to foster dialogue around contemporary local, national, and global issues. We also provide educational programs for middle and high school students and a professional education program for Bronx-based artists that provides opportunities for training in documentary photography, film, and multimedia storytelling.


Overview:

The BDC holds 8-10 exhibitions annually focused on documentary photography and photojournalism. The Exhibition Assistant will play an important role in helping to prepare exhibitions, especially in supporting their pre-and post-production, working closely with the Exhibition Manager. 


Time Commitment:

The position requires a commitment of at least 40 hours during the production of exhibitions and 8 hours during post-production. Due to the changing/flexible needs of the BDC, it is understood that additional hours may be required, and from time-to-time, the position may necessitate flexibility in arrival and departure times. This position requires an in-person presence. 


Responsibilities/Duties:

Exhibitions

  • Assist with exhibition framing, caption printing and mounting, photo mounting/matting

  • Support with production of exhibitions including supply runs, small carpentry- related tasks, painting walls, installing frames, installing/adjusting lighting

  • Assist with deinstallation of exhibition,  including deinstalling of frames, images from frames, reorganization of frame room and properly archiving prints 

  • Follow and manage project timelines and calendar set forth by the Exhibition Coordinator

  • Photograph and video walkthrough of final exhibition installations for press and archive purposes

  • Create PDF files of current and past exhibitions

  • Assist with traveling shows

  • Maintain files of past exhibition and programs i.e. making sure all images and design files for each exhibition are backed up onto server (including files from our offsite graphic designer) 


Skills and Abilities

The Exhibition Assistant should:

  • Have interest in documentary and photojournalism practice. 

  • Have experience with using basic tools i.e. screw gun, drill, leveler, measuring tape

  • Be comfortable lifting heavy, sometimes large objects up to 50lbs

  • Be comfortable on a ladder up to 15ft high

  • Be able to work well with others in a high-pressured and fast-paced environment

  • Have an energetic and collaborative personality and a self-starter approach to work 

  • Pay acute attention to detail while often needing to multitask

  • Be comfortable in a small, mostly one-on-one work environment

  • Know how to use a digital camera

  • Be experienced with Adobe software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) is required


The following are recommended skills:

  • Fluency in Spanish

  • Experience with Adobe Premier and Photo Mechanic 


Qualifications/requirements:

  • Two years of related work experience or on track to arts administration/curation.

  • Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills. 

  • Demonstrated interest in documentary and photojournalism practice.
