Works of Art and Writing from northeastern U.S.-based Students Recognized in the 2022 National Awards Competition, along with a Selection of Works by Bronx-Based Regional Winners, will be on Display at the BDC Annex

Bronx Documentary Center announced today the second annual Bronx Artistry Showcase, on view at the Bronx Documentary Center Annex from November 4 – December 4, 2022. The Bronx Artistry Showcase is a special exhibition, free and open to the public during regular gallery hours, featuring more than 100 works of art and writing by northeastern U.S.-based students who received national recognition in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards—the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship program for creative teens—as well as a selection of works by Bronx-based participants who received regional recognition in the New York City Awards program. Aligned with the focus of the Bronx Documentary Center, the works featured in the exhibition have all received Scholastic Awards recognition in the Photography, Film & Animation, or Journalism categories.

On Friday, November 4th, the Bronx Documentary Center Annex will host an opening reception for students, family members, educators and community members. The event is free to attend and open to all, and will feature remarks, art-making stations, award-winning student film screenings, exhibition tours, student performances and giveaways.

Michael Kamber, Founder and Executive Director, the Bronx Documentary Center, said, “The Bronx Documentary Center is excited to partner with the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards on their student awards exhibition. The Scholastic Awards have spurred creativity and enormous pride in our students here in the Bronx; over the years these awards have been a springboard and encouraged careers in photography, the arts and journalism.”

Chris Wisniewski, Executive Director, Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, said, “We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with the Bronx Documentary Center to advance our shared mission of celebrating creative teens. This year’s bold, brilliant works are a terrific representation of the inspiring entries from this year’s Scholastic Awards recipients, and we are eager to showcase them with our partners.”

In the 2021–2022 program year, students from all five boroughs grades 7–12 entered more than 11,000 works in 28 categories to the New York City regional program of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, representing nearly 300 schools. Nationally, more than 100,000 students submitted over 260,000 works of art and writing to the Awards. Less than 2,000 works received a National Medal, placing National Award recipients within the top 1% of all entries. All works were judged anonymously by accomplished creative and literary professionals based on originality, skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice.

The New York City Regional Program of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is sponsored, in part, by Scholastic Inc., The Maurice R. Robinson Fund, Blick Art Materials, the Dedalus Foundation, the Wolf Kahn Foundation, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
